Formed by the deepest emotions of the human soul, filled with imagination and incredible ideas, modern Science Fiction Poetry is exiled from the SF literature universe. Being different in message, content and history, in comparison with the "well-known" poetry, Science Fiction Poetry represent a genuine genre, a literary specie capable to transcend our perceptions to unknown places. Build with extreme originality, balances the abstract and the concrete part of life in the way that creates thrilling emotions.

If anybody put these "keywords" in any web search server, will find million of pages about this wonderful literary form. Exists thousands of explications and analysis of the decreasing interest in writing this kind of poetry. With some of them we agree, others are just misinterpretations of real facts. In the following pages, we will give a short history of the development of Science Fiction Poetry and we will explain our point of view about the dark spot that covers this wonderful literary form.

We can associate with this genre also Fantasy Poetry, Horror Poetry, NonSense Poetry, Science Fiction Opera, Computer Poetry and a lot of other Speculative Arts related with.

In SF poetry we will find a specific language, which try to replace emotive words, try to mix human emotions with images and sounds, creating through a huge impact, a new kinds of feelings. Fantasy Poetry exploits the realm of the supernatural, brings along the symbolic taste of "far away and long ago" by using over-realistic expressions and visionary ideas. It is drawn from a complicate chain of myths and folklore motives, mixing the existentialism with the literature of the absurd, which is characteristic for our modern times. Horror poetry has not so many adepts, being based on Gothic symbols, dark rituals, magic and death.

When we talk about the history of SF poetry, we reffer to influence of the science in poetry, starting with Ancient Greece and ending in the early 20th century. It is well known that ppoetry in ancient times, was the language of philosophy, science and even politics. Before Pitagora, there was a lot of major treatments of science expressed as poetry, by example Parmenides, Archytas,Empedocles. Homer and Pitagora changed the perspective, the first one's work mixing the fantastic with religion in an original way, the second one identifing music with mathematics. Aristotle wrotes a treaty about poetry, where he clearly distinguished it from rhetoric and separated it from science. Aristotle said that a poet needs an "enthusiasm allied to madness", quotes that can express the poetry development in Middle Age period.

In that period, the poets after the Renaissance, where expected to refer to scientific images, using the astrological ancient heritage mixed with creativity and inventivity. They portrayed the emergence of the "new science" of Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, getting out from restrictions and accepting the new face of the materialism and determinism.

In the 18th century, starting with the discoveries of Newton, the science poetry became stronger, tring to combine in these new clothes, philosophy with natural science. The same tradition was kept in the 19th century but with major stylistic changes. It was the time of the Romantic revolution who shift the perspective from rational mechanism to enthusiastic imagination. The Romantics tried to use science in achieving more informations about the world of ancient magic, being in that way much closer to fantasy than rational facts. But poets like Shelley, Byron, Keats reacted to science in a more sophisticated and informed fashion.

In the 20th century science dominates the world, and influence directly the literature of any kind. Most of the modern poets wrote in a abstract, closed, mathematical way of thinking, displacing the last remnants of clasicism and medieval techniques from their work. Engineers, scientists, singers, all published poetry, influenced by all the technologies that bumped into our lives recently.

      Point of View

In now-a-days the science fiction poetry is covered by a bunch of other experiences, most of them visuals, which satisfies people needs more completely on a wide area. In a talk with some friends editors, we understand that the demands of poetry had decreased dramatically in comparison with the offers. Some people say that the virtual reality, computers, games, cinema and all the new technological things destroyed in us any kind of romantism. Agree, but in that way they made space for imagination. We understand the poetry a little different in comparison with these perceptions. Any poetry, of any kind, can be considered influenced by science fiction if appears in a suitable background. And like example, we recall the poetry from "Dune" by Frank Herbert, which read without contest is like an old-fashioned classic poetry. Put it inside a opera, the lyrics get a new shape, a new meaning. It is like we tried to remember the rain that was falling down in the hour of our birth. Getting loose the imagination is the start for any science fiction poetry. This kind of literature is not dead. Computers didn't killed it. By contrary, they made it stronger. We consider sf poetry, any kind of manifestation based on computer games, short sf stories, novels, anything that exploits the world which is already created. The start should be easy, writing about anything, games, books, characters, "delicate moments" not enough emphasised by some authors, etc. The fantasy is not only language. Is intent, is background, is passion. Let's try to break the laws of rigid thinking and start to give a new shape to science fiction most beautiful specie. Poetry. A new life.
